We Detroiters sure are a unique and interesting bunch. While we admit that living in the Motor City inspires its fair share of quirks, we’ll never be ashamed of where we come from or who we are. In that spirit, here are nine habits Detroiters have developed over the years — and we’ll defend them vehemently.
1. Rooting for the Lions.
Once a Lions fan, always a Lions fan — for better or for worse. Sure, we’re well aware that our team isn’t the "best of the best" when it comes to the NFL, but they’re OUR team. That means we’ll continue to paint our faces blue and head out to Ford Field every season to cheer for the one and only Detroit Lions.
2. Asking for Vernor’s when we’re sick.
What’s Pepto Bismol? Every true Detroiter knows that Vernor's is the way to go when it comes to settling an upset stomach. If you’re from Detroit, chances are good that you’ve requested a sip of your favorite beverage in place of "real" medicine on more than one occasion.
3. Throwing an octopus onto the rink before a hockey game.
What, you're telling me that you’ve never tossed a real octopus onto a hockey rink to bring good luck upon your team? Is that just us? Oh. Well, we Detroiters know that the best way to guarantee a Red Wings win is to grace the ice with a slimy purple octopus — so we’ll continue to do it!
4. Laughing at Big Beaver Road/Exit 69… every single time.
I don’t care how old you are: we all need a bit of immature humor from time to time. If you’ve commuted along I-75, chances are good that you’ve chuckled at Big Beaver Road, which conveniently happens to be located at Exit 69, at least once or twice.
5. Heading to Marvin’s when we need a break from reality.
Some people go to the movies. Others take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood. People from the Detroit area venture to Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum! Perhaps this is more true when you’re a kid, but there’s something completely magical about stepping into this wonderland of pinball machines, quirky signs, and flashing lights.
6. Claiming that square pizza just tastes better.
Detroit-style pizza will always have our hearts (and our tastebuds). Perhaps it’s tough for non-Detroiters to understand the appeal of a square-shaped piece of cheesy goodness, but trust us: there’s just something special about those crispy corners and that perfectly baked taste.
7. Venturing to another country for a "quick day trip."
Oh, don’t mind us. Just taking a leisurely little trip over the border into international territory. Here in Detroit, venturing to Canada is no big deal. In fact, many of our coworkers and pals live just across the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor! We won’t stop taking advantage of this awesome proximity anytime soon.
8. Dressing up our statues.
When our teams succeed, we have no choice but to celebrate as widely as possible. One of our favorite places to express excitement for a sporting victory is on the iconic Spirit of Detroit statue. Who says jocks and artistic types can’t mix? We think he looks pretty darn great all decked out in Detroit gear.
9. Giving the side-eye to people who put ketchup on coney dogs.
Listen, we know that everyone is entitled to their opinion when it comes to coney dog toppings, but many Detroiters wouldn’t dream of covering their delightful dog in ketchup. We can’t help but be a little judgmental when we see someone chowing down on a coney that’s topped with a strip of red sauce. But don’t worry: we’ll forget all about it as soon as we’re indulging in our own delicious dog.
Alright, Detroiters: it’s your turn. Which strange habits did we leave off our list? Share your thoughts in the comment section below. Stay weird, Detroit!
