We don’t have to tell you twice that Detroit is a special place. Whether your family has lived in the area for generations or you’re a newcomer from out-of-state, it’s not difficult to fall in love with the Motor City. Here are ten reasons Detroit is easy to adore — and why once you’re a Detroiter, you’re a Detroiter for life.
1. Our sports teams are the greatest, no matter what others might say.
Sure, every city loves its sports teams, but the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, and yes — even the Lions — are OUR teams. Nothing makes for a great day like a trip to Comerica Park or a Sunday afternoon of football-watching with fellow Detroiters. No matter how far we stray from the city, these teams will always have our loyalty.
2. Life just wouldn’t be complete without coney dogs.
Other places can imitate our coney dogs, but the originals can only be found in Detroit. Whether we’re down the road or across the country, those coney cravings can really only be satisfied by a Detroit eatery. After all, the way to a person’s heart is definitely through their stomach.
3. The Detroit River is completely stunning.
We love the Great Lakes and oceans as much as the next person, but the Detroit River has a beauty all its own. Nothing compares to a walk or bike ride along the Detroit Riverfront with views of the Ambassador Bridge and Ren Cen in the distance. No matter how many times we see it, the Detroit River never fails to impress.
4. The people of Detroit are diverse and welcoming.
Diversity is and always has been one of our strong suits. No matter who you are or what you believe, there’s a place for you in Detroit — and that’s a beautiful thing. From our large Greek population to the vibrant atmosphere of Mexicantown, we’ve got a little something for everyone. What’s better than that?
5. Art and music thrive in the Motor City.
If you’re from Detroit, chances are good that you have an appreciation for the arts. Whether you’re excited by classical works at the DIA or enamored with that Motown sound, there’s an art form hailing from the Motor City to keep you interested. Street art and sculptures also call Detroit home, and there’s nothing more wonderful than living among so much creativity.
6. No other city is so close to our Canadian counterparts.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a spot in the United States with such close proximity to Canada. When we Detroiters need a break from everyday life, it’s easy to head across the bridge and spend some time in Windsor. How many other cities can say that they’re just a stone’s throw away from an international border? We’re lucky to have some fantastic neighbors across the way.
7. That Detroit pride runs deep — even in the suburbs.
You don’t have to be from the heart of the city to feel connected to its incredible atmosphere. Part of Detroit’s beauty is that many of its suburbs boast unique histories and environments of their own — and this includes strong family ties. Whether you’re from Ferndale, Southfield, or Rochester, you’re part of what makes our region so lovely.
8. Detroit inspires growth and change.
Detroit is constantly evolving, and that means the atmosphere here is one of forward motion and positive growth. It’s nearly impossible to live in Detroit without feeling inspired by the many projects, start-ups, and renovations taking place throughout the city. Detroit is a source of constant inspiration, and that’s tough to replicate anywhere else.
9. Vernors and Faygo are the elixirs of life.
Sure, you can find these beverages elsewhere — but nowhere are they quite so abundant as in and around Detroit. When you have an upset stomach, nothing but Vernors will do, and Faygo somehow just hits the spot unlike any other type of pop. For Detroiters, these drinks taste like home.
10. Detroit is resilient, and so are Detroiters.
Our city has been through its fair share of ups and downs, to say the least. We know our reputation isn’t what it once was, and that’s okay — because we know the truth. Detroit is a city dedicated to rebuilding and becoming something greater than it ever was before. If you’re a Detroiter, the persevering spirit of the city is always with you — no matter how far you stray.
