When people think of Detroit, they think of crime, the auto industry, and maybe even rapper Eminem. When you meet someone new and they learn that you’re from Motor City, the questions start coming about life, how safe is it to live here, and what is there even to do downtown? Have you ever been asked any of these eight questions people ask when you’re from Detroit?
1. "Is Detroit really that dangerous?"
Crime in Detroit has decreased since the 1970s, and there are plans in action to revitalize areas in the city that are considered to be the most dangerous. Thousands of people work in the city and have worked here for years and are perfectly happy to do so.
2. "Do you live near 8 Mile?"
Eminem made this mile famous after naming the film about his life growing up on Detroit's "8 Mile." However, 8 Mile is just a regular road and there isn't much to see here. People usually just drive on it since it runs from I-94 all the way to the west side of metro Detroit.
3. "How can you still cheer for the Lions?"
Okay, so the Lions haven't been doing so hot, but we aren't fair-weather fans and the team is definitely on the up and up. At least we aren't as bad as the Browns.
4. "How do I turn left?"
Every Detroiter knows about the "Michigan Left," and we are getting a little tired trying to explain it all the time. So here it goes: it's basically a U-turn. The roads have been designed to allow for U-turns at intersections where vehicles can't make a left. Right after making a U-turn, drivers usually make the next right.
5. "How is it sooo cold?"
Detroit has it's fair share of bad winters, but we're sure other places do too. Stop complaining and enjoy the snow!
6. "Can't you buy a house for crazy cheap?"
There has been a lot of buzz about how cheap real estate is in Detroit; however, there are consequences for investing in real estate just about anywhere you look. A cheap fixer-upper never really costs as little as it seems... and it'll take hard work and a lot more money for it to feel like home.
7. "What is there to do in Detroit?"
There are tons of things to do here! There are numerous restaurants where you can get Greek, Polish, Arabic and Spanish foods, amazing museums to check out, great shopping and hey, we even have our own island park that's bigger than Central Park in NYC!
8. "Do you think Detroit's going to get any better?"
Yes, Detroit will always get better... because that's how it works with growth and changes in any metro city. We work hard and strive for improvement and positive development. The people living here are staying because they know the city has always been a great place to live, and will continue to get better in the future.
