This Easy Hike In Detroit's Palmer Park Is Beautiful And Full Of History

Whether through magnificent wooded forests or within the dense mazes of our urban jungle, there’s no shortage of incredible hikes in Metro Detroit. For those willing to drive 20 minutes or so out of the city, the trail options in Michigan are endless! But for a quiet escape into nature without ever leaving Motor City limits, there are still plenty of options to choose from. Hidden away off of 7 Mile near Woodward Avenue, Palmer Park is a sweet public park that packs an incredible amount of history, beauty, and family activities into just under 300 acres – including an easy loop trail that’s perfect for all ages. Established in the late 1800s, Palmer Park is a unique greenspace on the outskirts of Detroit that has become a city landmark.

Families will find playgrounds for the kids, a historic cabin to explore, splash pads, free activities running year-round, a golf course, and even leashed dog-friendly areas.

But what truly distinguishes Palmer Park from its fellow neighborhood parks is the unique old-growth trees that thrive alongside the waters of Frances Lake. In fact, Palmer Park is the largest uncut old-growth forest in the Tri-County area, and one of just a few remaining in Detroit.

Some of the oak trees are nearly 350 years old!

Thomas Palmer donated the land for Palmer Park as part of an effort to preserve this special slice of nature in the heart of the city. As a result, this urban treasure has been loved and recreated in for more than a century.

You'll find multiple entrances to Palmer Park, but the trailhead can be found near the center.

This short, paved, 2.5-mile loop is quick, easy, and doable for all ages, but with plenty of gorgeous scenery to keep even the youngest visitors entertained.

Towering 150-year-old trees line the main walking path, which also winds along portions of Frances Lake and past the park's iconic lighthouse.

A total of 10 miles of trails meander through the park, but each path is clearly marked and will keep you safely within the park boundaries.

Quaint bridges and benches along the way are perfect for quick stops and photo ops.

Palmer Park may not be deep in the wilderness, but you'll be sure to find quiet beauty around every corner and a lovely little escape from the pulse of the city.
