Eloise first operated as a “poorhouse” and farm for impoverished Michigan residents, opening its doors in 1839. It eventually served as a psychiatric hospital – once the largest of its kind in the United States.

When the hospital wing of the complex closed for good in the early 80s, much of the property fell into disrepair. While Eloise once had 78 buildings, the remaining complex features just five, along with an on-site cemetery.

With its long history, there’s no shortage of ghost stories and dark tales surrounding the experiences of mentally and physically ill patients at Eloise. For this reason, it’s considered one of the most haunted spots in Michigan.

If you’d like to experience this spot for yourself, Ghost Hunts USA offers an overnight paranormal investigation experience at Eloise. These one-of-a-kind events begin at 8:30 p.m. and last until 5 a.m.
