If you’ve ever visited Palmer Park, which is located off Merrill Plaisance Street in Detroit, you might have noticed a seemingly timeless fountain tucked away atop the grass and greenery.
While you might not have previously given the vintage fountain much attention, we’re here to fill you in on its unique history. In fact, you might just find yourself wanting to check it out more closely for yourself.
The fountain in question is officially known as the Merrill Fountain. Its story begins in 1901, when it was constructed to stand in front of the Detroit Opera House in modern-day Campus Martius Park.
In its early days, the fountain was a symbol of beauty and charm that attracted opera-goers and everyday visitors alike. Its cool water and Italian Renaissance-inspired design made it a beautiful sight to see.
By the mid-1920s, though, city officials chose to move the fountain to Palmer Park in order to lessen overcrowding downtown. Unfortunately, as the years progressed, the fountain was poorly maintained.
When you visit today, you won’t find fresh, clean water spouting from the fountain – in fact, visitors have reported stagnant water (sometimes caused by weather) and overgrown grass within the stonework.
Despite its status as an item on the National Register of Historic Places, the Merrill Fountain might just be one of Detroit’s most forgotten remnants of the past. It’s even faced vandalism throughout the decades.
While the fountain no longer maintains its status as a downtown fixture or a beloved landmark, its beauty is undeniable – and with a bit of care and attention, it might just make a comeback in the years ahead.
