While Metro Detroit might not immediately come to mind when you’re brainstorming beachy destinations, our region actually houses an impressive stretch of shoreline that promises to provide endless family fun. Pack the sunscreen and head out to Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area, home to the longest beach near Detroit:
Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area is located at 7800 Gale Road in Waterford Township.
Situated approximately 50 minutes by car from Detroit, this 3,745-acre wonderland is filled to the brim with outdoor activities for the entire family. During the summertime, it’s especially exciting.
Many visitors stop by to enjoy hiking trails, horseback riding, picnicking, and even camping. For Detroiters who consider themselves beach bums, though, Pontiac Lake is extra exciting.
In addition to its many standard features, the park is home to Southeast Michigan’s longest beach. This stretch of sandy shoreline extends for just over half a mile along beautiful Pontiac Lake itself.
Even if you’re not staying at the on-site campground, you can access the day-use beach area. As temperatures continue to rise in Metro Detroit, it’s hard to resist this refreshing beach.
Set up your beach chair along the water, build sandcastles with the kids, or take a dip to cool off. If you’re a fan of boating, kayaking, or lakefront fishing, you’ll also find plenty to do here!
Round out your visit to the recreation area with a leisurely hike, a trip to the playground, or a picnic lunch. Of course, you might find it difficult to tear yourself away from the spectacular shores of the lake itself.
