If you’re a food-lover (and, let’s face it: who isn’t?), Detroit should be at the top of your “must-visit” list. We know that everyone has their own preferences when it comes to great cuisine, but there are a few food and drink items that seem to hit the spot for most residents of the Motor City. Here are nine favorites among Detroiters that will have your mouth watering in no time.
1. Coney dogs
This one is pretty obvious, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a Detroiter who doesn’t love indulging in a good coney dog from time to time. Nothing beats the perfect flavor of a coney from Lafayette or American, and imitation dogs just don’t do the trick. When you think coney dog, you should always think Detroit.
2. Vernors
Detroiters adore Vernors, but not for the reasons you might expect. Sure, the taste can be enjoyable when you’re craving ginger ale, but most of us employ Vernors as a quick remedy for an upset stomach! It’s so much easier than taking "real" medicine, don’t you agree?
3. Slows BBQ
Is there anything more delicious than a Yardbird from Slows after a long work week? We think not. When you’re looking for the best of the best in terms of Detroit BBQ, this is the spot for you. The dishes are hearty, the portions are generous, and the meat is smoked just right. Yum.
4. Detroit-style pizza
Square pizza might not sound like a natural option to out-of-towners, but trust us when we say that it’s ridiculously delicious. Here in Detroit, we like our pizza with crispy corners — and you probably will too, as soon as you dig into a delightfully cheesy slice of Motor City pie.
5. Faygo
Redpop, Orange, and every flavor in between: they all conjure memories of our Michigan childhoods. Here in Detroit, Faygo is the pop that stands out above the rest, and with good reason! We enjoy a Coca-Cola as much as the next person, but Faygo will always lead the pack in Detroiters’ books.
6. Better Made Potato Chips
These chips are manufactured right here in the Motor City and pack in lots of flavor and crunch. What’s not to love? When Detroiters reach for a snack, Better Made is always a fantastic (and delicious) option. The calories don’t count if you’re supporting a local company, right?
7. Tacos
With a large and vibrant Mexican population comes plenty of incredible taco joints, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the diversity of our city. Venture over to Detroit’s Mexicantown and make your way through all sorts of family-owned taquerias and eateries. Want to see our picks for the best tacos in the city? Check out our previous article

8. Gyros
Mexicantown serves tacos, Greektown serves… you guessed it: gyros! For a taste of authentic Greek cuisine, head to Detroit and chow down on a tasty gyro. It doesn’t matter whether you pronounce the name properly or not — your gyro will taste just as delicious either way!
9. Sliders
Did you know that Detroit is the original home of the slider? These fantastic little sandwiches and burgers are perfect for when you’re hungry, but not TOO hungry. Check out our beloved Green Dot Stables for some of the best sliders in town, and get ready to be take a journey to culinary paradise.
