Are you a fan of all things whimsical? While everyday life in Metro Detroit provides plenty of magical moments, there’s something extra special about an out-of-the-ordinary adventure. Luckily for those of us who live in and around the Motor City, there’s one trail of fairy doors near Detroit that will take you on a journey like none other — so round up a few curious friends and head out to explore.
Many Detroiters have spent ample time exploring beautiful Ann Arbor, a beloved college town that houses the University of Michigan and sits only 45 minutes by car from the heart of downtown Detroit.
While the city is well-known for its stunning campus, impressive assortment of eateries, massive football stadium, and access to the Huron River, it’s also home to a secret attraction: a fairy door trail.
That’s right: when you’re ready to immerse yourself in a bit of childlike wonder and glee, you’ll be thrilled to learn that there are tiny doors, purportedly for fairies, tucked away throughout the city of Ann Arbor.
The first fairy door made its appearance back in 1993. Over the years, a local teacher masterminded the installation of more quaint, enchanting doors throughout downtown and outside local businesses.
While there were once at least 10 doors to discover, seven currently remain. If you find yourself in Ann Arbor with time to spare, you’ll want to embark on a journey with your camera and offerings for the fairies.
Each door is decidedly unique, some with vibrant colors and quirky additions. If you’re really looking for an imaginative experience, be sure to remind your kids to keep their eyes peeled for fairies themselves.
Some of the most well-known fairy doors in Ann Arbor can be found at the entrance to the local library, a cafe called Sweetwaters, music venue The Ark, a shop known as Peaceable Kingdom, and more.
While you can easily identify the fairy door locations with a quick internet search, we think there’s something magical about hunting map-free or asking locals for insight. After all, magic awaits around every bend.
