It’s no secret that Detroiters are pretty special people. We hail from one of the most unique and important cities in the country, and our one-of-a-kind metropolis has instilled us with an incomparable set of values, interests, and traits. If you’re looking to start a romantic relationship with a Detroiter, though, there are a few things you should know — and we’ve conveniently listed them for you below.
1. Don’t call it "soda" in front of us.
Seriously, we’re pretty adamant about this one. Here in Detroit, we refer to our favorite fizzy drink as "pop," and we tend to get a bit heated when someone challenges our vocabulary. If you want to maintain a healthy relationship with someone from Detroit, it’s probably best to accept that we’ll never, ever, EVER call it "soda." Don’t expect us to budge!
2. Sporting events always make for great dates.
Here in the Motor City, we’re passionate about our sports teams. For us, there’s nothing more fun than a day at the ball park with someone we love, so get ready to attend a whole lot of Tigers games! When it’s not baseball season, we also love going to see the Lions, Red Wings, and Pistons play. Want to earn a few bonus points? Buy us tickets to an away game so we can prove our dedication!
3. Don’t like coney dogs? We might have an issue.
Detroiters certainly like to eat, and nothing hits the spot quite like a perfectly made coney dog. If you really want to impress your Detroit date, gobble down a Lafayette coney dog with all the fixings and don’t worry about making a mess. After all, nothing says romance like diced onions and cheese. Mmm…
4. We’ve already got a whole list of marriage proposal locations in mind.
When we’re ready to take our relationship to the next level, we’re definitely hoping that the proposal will be epic. Whether we’re the proposer or the proposee, one thing is for certain: we’ve always envisioned getting engaged at one of Detroit’s most romantic locations. From among the artwork at the DIA to the beautiful lawns of Belle Isle to the Detroit Riverfront, there are all sorts of scenic locations for popping the question!
5. Forget chocolates. Buy us a box of paczkis instead!
These Polish pastries are one of our favorite sweet treats here in Detroit, and it’s no secret why. Is there anything better than a deep-fried puff of dough covered with powdered sugar and stuffed to the gills with fruity filling? We think not, and we don't limit our love for paczkis to Fat Tuesday alone. If you really love us, you’ll surprise us with a big box of these one-of-a-kind delicacies.
6. We’re defensive of our hometown, and you should be too.
Don’t try any anti-Detroit jokes around us. Sure, we’re well aware that the Motor City has faced some struggles throughout the years, but we also know that our hometown is constantly evolving and growing. If you really want to be with a Detroiter, you must be willing to recognize the positive aspects of a city that’s often looked down upon by outsiders.
7. Music is the way to our hearts.
When you’re wooing a Detroiter, there’s one thing you can’t forget: music runs through our veins! Detroit is the home of Motown music and has produced countless iconic performers throughout the years. Because of this, Detroit residents are always game to attend a concert or sing along with our favorite Stevie Wonder hit — so feel free to incorporate music into our date nights!
8. We like to play hard, but that means we work hard, too.
Sure, Detroit is home to plenty of opportunities to hit the town. Whether we’re at a nightclub or gambling the evening away at Greektown Casino, we certainly know how to have fun here in the Motor City. But we also have an unbeatable work ethic and a sense of perseverance that simply can’t be matched. To date a Detroiter, you have to be prepared for a healthy balance between fun and work.
9. Give us Vernors when we’re sick, not chicken soup.
We all know that there’s something inherently romantic about a significant other who cares for their sweetheart during an illness. This sort of dedication is heartwarming, but your Detroit boyfriend or girlfriend might have a few unique specifications when it comes healing. Instead of bringing us a big bowl of homemade soup, just pour us a glass of Vernors. Our stomachs (and our hearts) will certainly thank you.
10. We’re basically honorary Canadians.
If you’ve spent any time at all in Detroit, you know that we’re just a quick drive away from the Canadian border. It only takes a matter of minutes to commute from downtown Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, and this means that we’re almost Canadians ourselves. So please don’t give us any flack for getting a tiny bit emotional whenever we hear the Canadian National Anthem.
11. We’ll never love you quite as much as we love our city.
We might love you more than anybody else in the whole world, but there’s just nothing quite as strong as the adoration we feel for our hometown. The pride of being a Detroiter is something that must be felt to be understood. The best way to solve this dilemma, of course, is to relocate to Detroit with us — before you know it, you’ll be overflowing with your own sense of Motor City love.
Have you ever dated someone from Detroit? Which of these experiences held true for you? Do you have any advice for fellow significant others of people from the Motor City? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.
