The building was constructed in 1900 and was previously known as Grand River Station before a thorough renovation.

When it comes to castles in the Motor City area, we’d be remiss not to include the Grand Army of the Republic Building. In fact, we’ve featured this spot in previous articles—and with good reason. It stands out among other buildings in the area for its castle-inspired design and magnificent presence. While it has housed everything from breakfast cafes to bars throughout the years, its exact future is unknown.

If you can swing a 90-minute drive from Detroit, the Curwood Castle is absolutely worth exploring. This beautiful writing studio-turned-museum was originally built by author James Oliver Curwood in 1923. Situated along the banks of the Shiawassee River, this small but mighty structure offers the public a glimpse into Curwood’s life and works. We can’t imagine a more enchanting day trip destination.
