There’s so much to love about life in the Motor City. We Detroiters are lucky to live in one of the country’s most vibrant and culturally rich locales, with countless unique attributes. From our artistic contributions to our close proximity to an international border, there’s plenty to be grateful for. Here are 11 awesome elements of Motor City life that Detroiters simply can’t get enough of.
1. Sports
Detroiters sure do love our sports teams. No, we don’t always bring home titles and trophies (we’re looking at you, Lions) or perform perfectly, but there’s nothing better than a day spent at the ballpark or courtside with our fellow Detroit sports fans. From the Red Wings to the Tigers, we’re watching each and every game while decked out from head to toe in Detroit gear.
2. Coney dogs
Detroit is the home of coney dogs, and you won’t find a city who does them better. There’s something perfectly savory about indulging in a coney from Lafayette or American, and every Detroiter has fond memories of enjoying these tasty treats during childhood. We’d be nothing without our coney dogs!
3. Faygo
And Vernors. And essentially any other kind of pop, if we’re being honest. Faygo is king when it comes to Detroit pop selections, and there’s something uniquely satisfying about cracking open a can of Redpop after a long day of work. Of course, we’re almost as passionate about other pop varieties, but Faygo will always be a hometown original.
4. Belle Isle
No matter how much we love the hustle and bustle of life in Detroit, there’s nothing better than escaping the harsh realities of everyday existence from time to time. Here in the Motor City, Belle Isle offers a perfect reprieve from the fast-paced work week. Whether we’re stopping in to catch a sunset or peruse the aquarium halls, there’s so much to adore about Belle Isle.
5. Better Made Potato Chips
Is there anything more delicious than a snack with Detroit roots? We think not. Better Made products come from right here in our own neck of the woods, and they’re always there for us when salty cravings strike. Sure, we appreciate a bag of Doritos or Lays from time to time, but nobody beats Better Made.
6. Music
We’re eternally proud of that Motown sound and we’re not sure where we’d be without it! There’s just something in the air here in Detroit that seems to bring fantastic music into existence, and we Detroiters rely on our favorite tunes to help us celebrate each and every day.
7. Detroit-made cars
They certainly don’t call us the Motor City for nothing! We’re proud to have produced so many incredible cars throughout the years, and our fascinating history with the automobile industry will always play a major role in the lives of Detroiters. You won’t catch a true Detroiter dead in a car that wasn’t produced locally!
8. The Detroit River
There’s something deeply peaceful about strolling alongside the Detroit River, and those of us who grew up in here will always feel a connection to this beautiful body of water. After all, it’s an ideal place to sit with our thoughts, people-watch, or get outside for a bit of fresh air. What’s not to love?
9. Motor City pride
We’re fiercely proud to be from Detroit, and we’re not afraid to show it. Our city has certainly experienced its fair share of ups and downs throughout the years, but we never let the negative press or uninformed opinions affect our love for the Motor City. We’ll represent our hometown until the day we die.
10. Resilience
Longtime Detroiters have witnessed the city in all sorts of unfortunate situations, from financial woes to social issues, but we’ve never given up on the place we call home. After all, we know that Detroit is a city on the mend, and we love to watch the incredible innovations that appear here each and every day.
11. Each other
At the end of the day, we Detroiters rely on our friends and family for strength, purpose, and companionship. Detroit simply wouldn’t function without our vast community of loved ones and neighbors, all of whom work together to make our city a better place to live. While there’s plenty to be said for material possessions, nothing beats the feeling of camaraderie that comes with living in Detroit.
