Nothing beats a bike ride with the family. Whether you’re biking for exercise, pure enjoyment, or sightseeing, there’s something fun about hopping onto a set of wheels and taking a spin along some of Metro Detroit’s prettiest bike trails. Here are seven such spots in and around the Motor City that everyone who loves to bike should check out at least once.
1. Dequindre Cut
If you’re hoping to stay within the bounds of the Motor City, the Dequindre Cut simply can’t be beat. This paved trail extends for two miles along a former railway line and offers views of the Detroit River, plenty of fascinating public art, and some of Detroit’s most unique neighborhoods. If you get tired along the way, stop and enjoy some of the area’s green space or benches. What’s not to love?
2. Clinton River Spillway Bike Path
Put on your helmet and head out for a fun spin along the Clinton River Spillway Bike Path, a two-mile gem that’s paved with asphalt and features wooded views alongside glimpses of the lovely Clinton River itself. If you’re hoping to continue your journey, you’re in luck: the path connects to the longer Metro Parkway Trail, which ultimately offers access to nearby Metro Beach.
3. Macomb Orchard Trail
Whether you’re looking for a serious extended ride or simply enjoying a portion of the path, you’ll absolutely adore Macomb Orchard Trail. This sprawling pathway stretches for 23.5 miles through Macomb County, offering a serene vibe and paved ground, making it perfect for a bike ride. The trail’s endpoints can be found in the towns of Richmond and Rochester, though there are countless access points throughout.
4. Hines Park Trail
The whole family will have a blast biking along Hines Park Trail, which stretches between Dearborn’s beloved Greenfield Village and the city of Northville. As you venture along the 20-mile route, you’ll pass through peaceful parks, swaths of forested beauty, and greenery galore during warmer months. There’s no better way to get outside and enjoy the scenery.
5. Belle Isle Park Bike Trail
For those who want to stay closer to the city, Belle Isle is another fantastic option. This iconic island park is home to plenty of attractions for Detroiters to enjoy, but its bicycle trail is decidedly underrated. The bike route extends along the edge of the island and runs alongside the road, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for traffic as you ride. Along the way, stop to enjoy views of the Motor City skyline.
6. West Bloomfield Trail
Nature enthusiasts will absolutely adore biking along this crushed stone trail, which stretches for just under seven miles through some of Metro Detroit’s prettiest outdoor scenery, including wetlands, ponds, and all sorts of forested splendor. To enhance your journey, stop and stretch your legs as the trail winds through the brilliant West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve.
7. Thomas Edison Parkway Boardwalk
You’ll have to make the hour-long drive from Detroit to Port Huron to appreciate this trail, but trust us when we say that it’s well worth it. During your bike ride along over 4,500 feet of waterfront beauty, you’ll appreciate incredible views of the St. Clair River and even a few glimpses of Ontario across the way. Stop to rest atop the grass or enjoy a picnic in the accompanying park area - does it get much better?
