Belle Isle is just one of Detroit’s gems and is home to a nature zoo, maritime museum, an aquarium, golf practice facility, and has plenty of room to enjoy a picnic. What also makes this island park unique is the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, which features a wide array of beautiful and rare flora, including one of the nation’s largest collections of orchids. Check out why you need to get out of the busy city for a day and walk through this charming conservatory.
Plan your next visit to Belle Isle's Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory.
The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory was designed by famous architect Albert Kahn and is the oldest continually running conservatory in the United States. Stepping into the conservatory will make you feel like you're in another world.
The Conservatory is divided into five distinct sections.
The Conservatory was dedicated to Anna Scripps Whitcomb on April 6, 1955, when Whitcomb donated her 600 plant orchid collection to the city of Detroit. Since then, Detroit has been home to the largest municipally owned orchid collection in the country. Many of these exotic flowers were saved from Britain during World War II.
Come and see the beautiful Conservatory for yourself! It'll be an unforgettable experience.
