Are you counting down the days until Michigan’s peak fall foliage makes an appearance? During the autumn months, there’s nothing more magical than finding a beautiful vantage point from which to appreciate the changing leaves. One underrated overlook here in the Great Lakes State might have a spooky name, but the vistas you’ll experience here are nothing short of spectacular.
Deadman’s Hill Overlook is located off Deadman’s Hill Rd in Elmira.
This northern Michigan gem might not be the most famous spot in the state, but it undoubtedly deserves a place on your bucket list - particularly when fall foliage appears.
This scenic area has a sad history. In 1910, a young lumberjack passed away in a tragic timber cart accident on the morning of his own wedding, hence the hill’s name.
While the overlook’s moniker is decidedly dark, visitors will be happy to learn that natural beauty abounds throughout. In fact, it’s tough not to be impressed by the scenery here.
From atop the hill, you’ll have the chance to enjoy impressive views of the Jordan River Valley. During fall, the surrounding Mackinaw State Forest bursts with vibrant hues.
If you’re hoping to extend your outdoor adventure, you’re in luck: hikers can also access the extensive Jordan River Pathway via a trailhead at Deadman’s Hill.
For a shorter adventure, check out the Deadman’s Hill Loop, a 3.1-mile trek that also begins at the overlook. Along with natural beauty, you’ll find remnants of Michigan’s logging history.
As you make plans for fall, be sure to consider Deadman’s Hill Overlook. Just don’t forget to bring along your camera - you’ll surely want to remember these incredible colors.
