The Hippie Tree is an old willow that can be found deep in the forest of Traverse City.

The tree received its nickname because of the spiritual visitors (hippies, as they were called by locals) who would come to this spot for enlightenment. After receiving visions, these artists would then paint on the bark of the tree in bright, neon paint.
While the appearance of the tree itself may not evoke nightmares, the story behind it surely does.

The tree is situated near the abandoned Old State Hospital Grounds. Legend has it that the tree, although no longer alive, is filled with the restless spirits of those who once lived at the hospital. Many who visit the tree, accessible by means of a small path, report an overwhelming sense of madness and discomfort.
