Many Michiganders have fond childhood memories of summer days spent creating sidewalk chalk masterpieces. Whether you drew hopscotch patterns, wrote your name in cursive, or created entire murals in the driveway, there was no better way to creatively express yourself. If you’re a fan of sidewalk chalk (and, really, who isn’t?), you’ll have a blast at this colorful festival in the Great Lakes State.
The 2018 West Michigan Chalk Art Festival will take place from June 15-16 at Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids, located at 350 84th Street SW in Byron Center.
This creative gathering will amaze kids and adults alike with its unique displays of art. From experts to amateurs, countless artists will show their stuff on the sidewalk.
Take a stroll through the area and watch as masterful artists create mesmerizing chalk designs. There’s no telling what you’ll come across - and that’s half the fun.
Some of the pieces at the festival will be so realistic that you’ll swear you’re staring at photographs. Optical illusions, lovely landscapes, and portraits will capture your eye.
Of course, this is more than a festival - it’s also a competition. The top four adult artists will take home cash prizes of $100 to $1,000, while youth artists can win up to $100.
You can even have a say in the judging process by casting your vote for the "People’s Choice" artist, who will be awarded $500. Talk about an exciting event!
Other awards include best team/family entry, most humorous, best use of color, best 3D, best photo rendition, and best use of the festival’s theme, which is "wellness."
Younger attendees will enjoy having their faces painted, while parents can peruse the surrounding shops or grab a quick bite to eat. What’s not to love?
Whether you’re an artist, a curious observer, or a combination of the two, one thing is certain: you’ll have an unforgettable - and colorful - experience at this festival.
