I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.
I'm excited to share all my favorite Michigan destinations with you. Keep exploring.
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
While I know there’s nothing like getting together with a group of friends for a cozy winter day inside, sometimes you just want some space for yourself and your loved ones. There are few things as romantic as watching the snowfall on a quintessential Michigan winter day while warming up next to the fire.
From the moment you arrive at this lakeside home in Charlevoix, you’ll be enchanted by the design of the full house. The Chalet is an annexed area of the home that offers guests their own entrance. It’s hard to not get curious about this unique design.
The property owner says the Chalet can sleep up to six guests, but it’s ideal for romantic couples retreats or private getaways.
The breathtaking woodwork inside this rental is the perfect design to connect you with nature. This is exactly what I think of when I imagine cozying up to the fire on a chilly Michigan winter night.
There is an indoor fireplace that guests can use. If you’re trying to warm up without flames, there is a hot tub that is sure to keep you cozy.

The dining area is as charming as the rest of the living space. The Chalet comes with a compact kitchen for quick meals and some stools to enjoy dining together.
The Chalet is also just minutes from downtown Charlevoix. Guests can order out from several great restaurants before bundling up for a delicious dinner.
The master suite is located down one flight of stairs. The best part is this spiral staircase that connects all three floors. Those sleeping in this room can rest easy on the king-sized bed.
The owner owns three other “mushroom house” properties like this one. So, before you try to fit a big party into this home, double-check with the owner to see if any of his other options are more suitable for your needs.
There’s not much left for me to say that this photo of the beautiful Lake Michigan sunset doesn’t make clear already. This will be your nightly view looking over the big lake.
There’s plenty of patio furniture along with a grill station in the backyard to make every night as memorable as the last.
Even though you’ll have The Chalet all to yourself, Charlevoix also offers several unique reasons to get out of the house and explore. Skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hikes are just a half-hour drive east to Boyne Mountain Resort.
