If you’re a fan of walking, nature, history, big cities, waterfront views, and more, you’ve likely taken a stroll along the spectacular Detroit River. This waterway in Michigan’s largest city is nothing short of incredible, and visitors are lucky to have unique access to its shores via the Detroit International Riverwalk, also known as the Detroit Riverfront. While locals have always been aware of this walkway’s many delights, the Riverfront recently earned top honors in a ranking of America’s Best Riverwalks from USA Today. It’s easy to understand why.
The Detroit International Riverwalk extends for upwards of three miles in total, offering curious visitors the chance to marvel at the Detroit River itself and gaze across at Ontario’s shores.
For many Detroiters, the Riverwalk is a source of serenity and inspiration amid an otherwise bustling cityscape. The walkway is proudly managed by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.
In its recent ranking, USA Today specifically praises the East Riverfront section, which begins near the site of the now-defunct Joe Louis Arena and extends to the greenery of Gabriel Richard Park.
While strolling along this section, you’ll find so much to appreciate. Visitors can stop to dine at local waterside eateries like the Rattlesnake Club or Atwater Brewery & Tap House.
Take time to gaze at the towering Renaissance Center, a modern Detroit icon that’s impossible to miss. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a freighter or two making its way down the river.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to unwind at Milliken State Park and Harbor, another stop along the Riverwalk. There’s even a picturesque on-site lighthouse to admire here.
For an extended adventure, continue along the Dequindre Cut, a bicycle-friendly greenway that follows a former railroad line all the way into Detroit’s Eastern Market area. Talk about fun!
Whether you’re a Motor City resident or a first-time visitor to this waterfront space, one thing is certain: our spectacular Detroit International Riverfront is worthy of all the accolades it receives.
