I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.
I'm excited to share all my favorite Michigan destinations with you. Keep exploring.
A perfect night out typically ends by filling your stomach with something truly satisfying, but why wait until the evening finishes before digging in? You can do both at Standby in Detroit, and I’d even say it’s in your best interest to order off both their creative drink and food menu. If you’re looking for some of the best bar food in Michigan, start with a location that doesn’t disappoint in Standby.
While it’s considered a hidden gem, this bar is by no means a hole-in-the-wall.
The classy atmosphere is the perfect setting to order one of the inventive cocktails. The bartenders have the skills to whip up any classic cocktail or some of the riffs they’ve perfected in-house.
Standby goes the extra mile with all of its cocktails, using ingredients and techniques you’ll likely never find at your typical neighborhood bar.
Some of their creations come in shells or coconuts, and they’re all garnished beautifully. For those who eat and drink with our eyes, these are certain to satisfy.

Now this is why I wanted to highlight Standby. Their food is definitely next level.
Instead of tacos, they serve tostadas. Instead of regular deviled eggs, theirs come Bloody Mary style. You can also find the best of two seafood dishes in their coconut calamari, (no hard feelings shrimp, but you’re no match for your tentacled cousin).
Have you ever dined at Standby before? Do you think this is the best bar food in Michigan? Let us know in the comments! If you need a night in with delicious takeout, consider checking out what Grubhub has to offer in your area.
