I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.
I'm excited to share all my favorite Michigan destinations with you. Keep exploring.
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
If you’re picturing the quintessential Michigan getaway, you’re probably thinking of something like the Inn at Bay Harbor, Autograph Collection in Petoskey, Michigan. This charming resort and hotel will keep you as active or as relaxed as you please.
With numerous ways to explore the property and the surrounding area all year round, there’s no better place for this hotel than on our list of the Best Resorts in Michigan. Get ready for an epic adventure or the most relaxing experience you can imagine. The choice is up to you.
For decades, this resort has been the standard of classy luxury in the Little Traverse Bay area of Michigan. It features 105 rooms and suits with many of them offering breathtaking views of the sun setting over the western sky.
This resort comes with plenty of amenities, so don’t be shocked by rates in the $400 range. Inn at Bay Harbor offers free shuttles to off-property locations, complimentary breakfast for two, beachcomber rentals in the summer, and snowshoe rentals in the winter. That’s just naming a few.
These rooms are just as charming as the inviting sandy beaches right outside your window. Each room is outfitted with comfortable linens, vibrant decor, and high-speed wifi.
I am an absolute sucker for a complimentary robe as well. Each guest will get their own as part of the reservation. It’s the little things that bring me joy.

Experience several ways to America’s Summer Golf Capital. There are numerous golf courses in the area, but you’ll find 27 holes located right on the resort property. The Bay Harbor Golf Club might have some difficult holes, but the awe-inspiring views help any frustration melt away.
You can also book a tee time at the Crooked Tree Golf Club close by. The resort offers free shuttle service to these locations. Boyne Golf is also one of the nearby courses they recommend. You won’t find a resort on our list of the Best Resorts In Michigan that gives you such great access to this much golf.
For ultimate relaxation, you need to visit The Spa located on the property. Whether you’re only looking for a touch-up on your nails or if you’re looking for a full day of pampering, the staff is eager to help you melt the stress away.
The resort is only a short drive from two great Michigan ski resorts. Guests at the Inn at Bay Harbor can redeem discounted lift tickets with their stay at The Highlands and Boyne Mountain.
For those who don’t like the lake water as much, there’s also a heated pool located on the resort’s greenspace. You can cool off any way you like.
Whether you book a stay when the water is warm or when it’s frozen, the staff at the Inn at Bay Harbor knows exactly what you’ll need to enjoy your stay. This is a bucket list destination for anyone who enjoys a round of golf. It’s equally as appealing to someone who loves a dip in the great lakes or someone who loves to tear up the slopes in the winter.
This resort certainly offers incredible amenities, but so do several other destinations on our list of the Best Resorts in Michigan. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, you might find something up your alley in that list.
