I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.
I'm excited to share all my favorite Michigan destinations with you. Keep exploring.
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
If you absolutely love relaxing by the calm waters of Lake Michigan in the summertime, this next resort on our list of the Best Hotels and Resorts in Michigan is for you. I’ve written about all the warm weather activities that make Southwest Michigan special, particularly in the state-line community of New Buffalo.
You can wrap all the summer fun into one trip with a stay at the Marina Grand Resort, one of the best options for on-the-water accommodations in the area. New Buffalo is chock-full of summer fun, and this is an incredible basecamp to experience them all. Rest assured you can expect a comfortable rest at the end of a long day.
This full-service waterfront resort not only caters to those looking for a getaway in Michigan, but its proximity to the Tri-State area makes it a popular option for travelers in Indiana and Chicago.
Those traveling from the Windy City won’t have to drive more than 1.5 hours to find their escape across the shoreline. The Amtrack also runs through New Buffalo, making this a destination you can reach by rail.
Find me a resort on our list of Best Places To Stay In Michigan that lets you park your boat right outside your room. This is a sailor’s dream destination where you’ll find slips lining the beautiful view over Lake Michigan.
From basic guest rooms to suits, all your options will come with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. The rooms are renovated with several accents that complement the natural beauty of the lakeshore.
This resort is full of unique amenities that take advantage of the natural beauty surrounding the property. Find your inner peace with some yoga on the back lawn or gaze out at the endless waters during a stunning sunset. If you’re not a big fan of swimming in the lake, there’s also an indoor and outdoor pool where you can soak.
If you’re traveling with children, there’s a game room that serves as a great distraction for energetic kids. Just don’t tell them about the Ben & Jerry’s Hotline, which brings some of your favorite ice cream flavors right to your door. I’d keep that one a surprise that you can pull out whenever your kids deserve an unexpected reward.
There are some classic dining options in New Buffalo including the Stray Dog Bar and Grill and Redamack’s, but you can also find great food within arms reach from your room at the Marina Grand Resort. Bentwood Tavern specializes in great Michigan beer, artfully crafted cocktails, and elevated tavern fare.
You’ll feel like a character in a Hemingway novel surrounded by the wood-clad and leather-upholstered interior. I can definitely settle into a good book and enjoy an old-fashioned in a place like this.
While you might have trouble leaving the comforts of the Marina Grand Resort, you should definitely take an opportunity to explore the rest of New Buffalo.
One of my favorite things to do in Southwest Michigan during the summer is to take a quick trip to Warren Dunes. It’s a great place to take my dog. Keep in mind that this resort is not pet-friendly, so you won’t be able to bring your four-legged friend to this location.
Those in the Northeast go to Cape Cod, while those in the Northwest go to Napa Valley. You can get the best of both those locations in the Midwest by traveling to Southwest Michigan. There are several places along the water from our list of the Best Hotels and Resorts in Michigan, and the Marina Grand Resort definitely deserves a top spot on the list.
With a variety of ways to enjoy the warm months, you’ll want to keep this place in mind whether you’re traveling from within the state or crossing state lines. Keep in mind, you might need to splurge a little as rates come in around $350 per night. That’s an easy figure to forget about when you’re letting all the stress melt away while guiding your paddleboard into the sunset.
