When you think of gorgeous beaches in the Great Lake State, West Michigan’s beaches might come to mind. Lake Michigan’s sandy shores bring in crowds from Chicago, making Saugatuck, Grand Haven, and South Haven popular tourist destinations. But what about the other side of the state? You may want to mark down a beach town vacation in Alpena, Michigan.
Alpena is located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan which is a four-hour drive from Detroit.
The city of Alpena has 10,000 residents and overlooks Lake Huron’s beautiful Thunder Bay. The city has a rich industrial history and has since become a place for outdoor enthusiasts.
Mich-e-ke-wis Park is directly on the water and has a delightful swimming beach, playground, bathrooms, and picnic area. You can also set up your beach chair at nearby Starlite Beach, which has a splash pad for kiddos.
For a truly unique nautical experience, hop on an Alpena Shipwreck Tour to see the country’s only freshwater National Marine Sanctuary. You’ll be able to see some of the nearly 100 historic shipwrecks hiding in the depths of Lake Huron.
