If you’re a history buff, you’ll find plenty to love here in the Great Lakes State. The Thumb Octagon Barn is located at 6948 Richie Rd in Gagetown.
This incredible building was constructed in 1924 by a Michigan businessman named James Purdy, who was inspired by an octagonal barn he’d seen during his travels.
Purdy’s farm originally comprised 560 acres. Today, the Thumb Octagon Barn complex takes up 40 acres of land and serves as an educational locale for the whole family.
The barn and other structures were saved by a group of concerned citizens after the Michigan Department of Natural Resources sought to remove them in the early 1990s.
Today, the barn and its surrounding buildings have been refurbished and furnished to give visitors an exciting and fun glimpse at Michigan’s agricultural heritage.
From May 15th through September 30th, the complex is open to the public. During your visit, you’ll have the chance to take a virtual journey into the past.
Visit the saw mill, marvel at the Purdys' farmhouse, or enjoy a walk through the one-room schoolhouse that makes its home here. There’s so much to see and learn.
There’s even a blacksmith shop on the farm, which features two complete blacksmithing stations that make for an up-close look at this oft-forgotten skill.
Of course, the real star of the show is the barn itself. Gaze up at its unique shape as you peruse an array of artifacts and farm equipment from throughout the generations.
By the time you head home, you’ll be happily exhausted - and fully equipped with a newfound appreciation for the agricultural heritage that makes Michigan special.
