So the New Year is upon us and that means it’s time make those resolutions. We’re talking about getting out and experiencing some new and exciting things in Michigan. To help you get started, we’ve come up with some suggestions to add to your 2016 bucket list.
A lot has changed in Detroit. Before you write it off, consider spending some time there. Sure, there are some bad neighborhoods, but there are also plenty of new restaurants, longstanding cultural institutions, and a real effort to make the city a better place to visit or live.

11) And while you're at it, have a picnic on Belle Isle.
Belle Isle really deserves its own spotlight because there's so much to explore there. So prepare a picnic and get ready to spend the whole day there (when weather permits, that is).
If there's one thing in abundance in Michigan, it's natural beauty. And there's no better way to appreciate it than visiting the state parks. Pictured here, Lower Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
Learn a little something about the capital city of Lansing by taking a guided tour of the Capitol Building. The award-winning, 19th century structure was designed by Elijah E. Myers and took six years to construct. You'll have a totally new appreciation for the history of the place if you take some time to really check it out.
This remote island, which sits on the frigid Lake Superior, is among the most remote places in the country. But if you're lucky (and patient!) you may just get a glimpse of the tiny moose population.
You know you love to indulge in Mackinac Island fudge. Next time you take the family for a visit, stop by one of the many shops to watch the makers do their chocolatey magic.
You've had Michigan cherries, no doubt, but have you taken the time to visit Traverse City for the National Cherry Festival? If not, you're missing out. Learn new recipes, check out an art competition, and take the kiddos to meet Super Cherry.
Folks come from all over the country, with their classic, souped up rides to partake in the Woodward Dream Cruise. Join in the ride, or bring plenty of lawn chairs for your family to sit back and relax.
2) Witness the launching of hot air balloons at the Grand Rapids Balloon Festival.
During this annual summertime event, look into the evening sky as it fills with colorful hot air balloons. Even see what it's like to sit in one (don't worry, you'll stay safely on the ground), and meet the pilots who fly them.
You haven't had a true kayaking experience until you've braved the shores of Lake Superior.
Sure, some things you’ve probably already done, but others you may not have considered yet. Or maybe you keep telling yourself that next year will be the year you finally try something new here. Whatever the case, just make sure you actually get out there and do it. One more thing, got any 2016 bucket lists of your own for Michigan? Tell us about it!
