1. Trying to imitate a Boston accent.
Oh man, is that painful to listen to. Unless you were born and raised in Boston, there’s no way we find your "really good" Boston accent anything but irritating. And forget about doing the whole "pahk the cah in Havahd Yahd" bit.
2. Saying that winter where you’re from is way worse.
Hey, we get that places like Michigan and Minnesota exist. And yes, we’re sure that February in Siberia is no picnic either. But Massachusetts and New England in general has to deal with some pretty miserable winter weather by any standard, and we’re really not interested in hearing how it’s two degrees colder where you’re from.
3. Taking the last Munchkin.
Seriously? Everyone knows that grabbing the last Munchkin in the box super rude. Unless it’s a jelly-filled one, because those are sort of the equivalent of licorice jellybeans. Major party foul.
4. Not knowing how to navigate a rotary. Or calling it a "roundabout."
We know that not all states have quite as many rotaries as Massachusetts, and we sympathize. But there’s something about curving around one alongside a car that seems weirdly hesitant or out of control that makes our stomachs turn.
5. Calling soda "pop."
We’ll know what you’re talking about, but we’ll definitely give you a hard time about it. "Pop" is the sound your tire makes after driving over one of the Bay State’s many potholes.
6. Assuming Massachusetts is just beaches and clam shacks.
Western Massachusetts doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves when it comes to tourism and press. There are so many amazing things to see once you leave the coast, so don’t assume we’re all just over here building sandcastles.
7. Adding tomatoes to the clam chowder.
Where do you think we are, New York? And don’t even think about serving up any of that clear, brothy chowder. Thick, white and piled high with oyster crackers is how we take our chowdah.
8. Calling Boston "Beantown."
Literally no one calls it that. No one. The only places you’ll find reference to our capital as a city of beans is on touristy postcards and bumper stickers.
9. Asking directions for the tunnel to Cape Cod.
A quick Google search would clarify this issue, but people someone are still taken in by the longstanding Cape Tunnel joke. Hey, we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.
10. Calling jimmies "sprinkles."
Shudder. The brown ones are jimmies, the rainbow ones are sprinkles. You can say "chocolate sprinkles" if absolutely necessary, but we’ll still cringe a bit.
11. Implying that we’re not the best state in the nation.
You don’t have to spend much time in Massachusetts to figure out why we Bay Staters are wicked proud of our home.
