Most People Don't Realize An Underground River Flows Right Through Massachusetts

Nature is full of strange and wonderful oddities, and underground rivers are definitely up there amongst the most remarkable. How can a river flow underground? Usually, this unique phenomenon occurs when the riverbed isn’t actually the surface of the earth, but the waters of the river flow into a cave system or are otherwise directed through an underground passage.

It’s a little-known fact that one of Massachusetts’ most scenic rivers actually flows underground!

Located on Cape Cod, Bass River is actually technically an estuary. It separates the town of Yarmouth and Dennis at the central and southern points of the communities. In the northwest, the river takes on a brackish, salty character and flows into Follins Pond. It narrows to a brook as it flows north to Mill Pond.

After it reaches Mill Pond, Bass River actually dips underground and disappears from sight. In fact, this underground steam almost bisects Cape Cod!

You would never know from looking at the land above that there is a hidden subterranean river flowing beneath the charming villages and scenic landscapes of the Cape, let alone one that nearly divides the Cape in half.

Unfortunately, you can’t explore the underground side of Bass River. Unlike the massive subterranean rivers of South America, this underground stream doesn’t feature a system of caves to wander. However, there’s plenty to do on the Bass River while it’s flowing under the sun!

Windmill Beach in South Yarmouth is a lovely spot for eating in the beauty of Bass River. It’s a relatively small stretch of sand, but features a charming white windmill that makes a great backdrop for photographs, and it’s a wonderful place to watch the sailboats cruising up and down the river.

Bass River Beach (also known as Smugglers Beach) is an amazing place to enjoy an idyllic Cape Cod afternoon.
