We here in Massachusetts are lucky to have plenty of gorgeous trails to explore when the weather is nice, but not all of them end in a glorious sky-high view. This lovely hike in Western Massachusetts will take you to what feels like the top of the world, all with minimal effort on your part.

The Michael H. Walsh Trail in West Stockbridge will lead you somewhere marvelous. Tucked away in the hills, this path winds through easy and beautiful terrain and drops you off at Olivia’s Overlook.

The trail is perfect for casual hikers and families. You don’t need to be in amazing shape to conquer this path, but you will need sturdy boots or sneakers. Much of the path is shaded, but there are bits during which you’ll be exposed to the sun. Slather on that sunscreen if you’re prone to burning.

Once you start to approach the overlook, you’ll be treated to glimpses of the land below through the flowers and trees. When you finally reach the overlook, the gorgeous Stockbridge Bowl will be spread out before you. Taking photos is a must, and bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy amongst the clouds wouldn’t be a bad idea. This is also one of the best places in the state to admire fall foliage.

The entire journey is about 2.5 miles round-trip, so it’s an easy way to fill an afternoon. The trail is well-marked and maintained, and dogs are allowed as long as they stay on their leashes. Be aware that the parking area isn’t super big, so you’ll want to carpool or plan to come earlier in the day if you want to quickly find a spot. Luckily, this trail never feels too busy.
