When most people think of charming autumnal Massachusetts destinations, they picture a cozy small town out in the western part of the state. And with good reason – central and western Massachusetts do fall to its fullest. However, there is one coastal spot that deserves a bit of recognition for its perfect fall ambiance. Newburyport is a Massachusetts town full of historic brick buildings, quaint shops and eateries, and the smell of the sea. Read on to learn why you should definitely put this spot on your autumn itinerary.
Newburyport is a great destination in any season, but it truly shines in the fall. It was founded in 1764, and is situated where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The wide, brick streets are lined with shops, restaurants and cafes that feel as if they fell straight out of a New England postcard.
There are so many lovely alleys and shady pathways down which to stroll in this seaside town.
And you don't have to travel far from downtown to spot great fall foliage, either. Vibrant gold, red and orange leaves peek out from between buildings and stretch over the sidewalks.
Don't miss the annual Pumpkin Festival! This year's festivities begin on October 15. Enjoy seasonal food, crafts and the glow of hundreds of gourds.
If you're in the mood for all things vintage, retro and antique, Oldie's Marketplace is the place to go. Just steps from the town center, this massive barn is jam-packed with curios and treasures.
It might not look like much from the curb, but Richdale's is a Newburyport institution. Stop by for a bag of penny candy, an armful of odds and ends, or a 25-cent hot dog.
If you're looking for something a bit more traditional, the Grog is a great option for lunch, dinner or just a pint or two of liquid comfort to cut the autumn chill.
When your appetite is taken care of, stroll down to the harbor and listen to the sound of the gulls, smell the briny air and watch the boats go in and out.
People-watching never gets old here.
If you're looking for an amazing place to spend a few hours (or days) this autumn, Newburyport should be at the top of your list.
