Sometimes the most beautiful spots to experience nature can be found in the most unexpected places. The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in the heart of Boston is one of these unique gems. When I’m in the mood to take a peaceful walk among the beautiful wildflowers, I often head for this city oasis instead of driving out to the country.
Located by the Boston waterfront, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is a 1.5-mile public park. The Greenway opened in 2008 and is now a popular spot for both locals and city visitors.
Through its winding paths of gardens, fountains, and public art sculptures, the Greenway connects a number of Boston neighborhoods. This wonderful place was named in honor of philanthropist and Kennedy family matriarch, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was born in Boston’s North End.
As you walk the Greenway, you will be able to view a variety of colorful wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. The gardens are all organically maintained by the Greenway Conservatory.
As you stroll through the Greenway, you will come across several fountains and sculptures containing water features. You can walk through the mist at the Harbor Fog Sculpture or dip your toes in the Chinatown Stream.
Instead of traditional horses, the carousel features local hand-carved animals such as turtles and falcons.
If you get thirsty while wandering the Greenway, you won’t have to look far for a place to grab a drink. The park has its own open-air beer and wine garden called the Trillium Garden.
A variety of rotating food trucks featuring over 15 cuisines can also be found on the premises.
More information about the Greenway’s gardens, events, and park highlights can be found on the Rose Kennedy Greenway official website and Rose Kennedy Greenway Facebook page. If you have visited the Greenway, what was your favorite part? For more places to view wildflowers and other beautiful plants, be sure to visit the gardens in Ashburnham and Acton. While in Boston, you may also want to take a food and history tour.
