6 Celestial Events In Massachusetts To Add To Your 2022 Stargazing Calendar
There’s something so magical and mysterious about the universe and the night sky. From eclipses to meteor showers and a supermoon, look up to the skies this year to see something spectacular. If you love to watch the night sky, you must add these six celestial events to your Massachusetts stargazing bucket list.

In April, get ready to gaze your eyes towards the sky to see the Lyrids meteor shower. At its peak, you may see upwards of 20 meteors shooting across the sky per hour. This meteor shower is caused by dust particles from the C/1861 G1 Thatcher comet.

At peak, the Delta Aquarids also produces 20 meteors per hour. At this time, there will be a new moon which means darker skies to enjoy the show. This meteor shower is caused by particles left behind from the Marsden and Kracht comets.

The Perseids shows off a spectacular number of meteors when it comes to town. It's considered the biggest and best meteor shower of the year, producing upwards of 60 shooting stars per hour and is caused by comet 109/P Swift Tuttle.

On May 16, a total lunar eclipse will be visible in the night sky. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth and moon align in such a way that the moon passes through the darkest part of Earth's shadow, usually causing the moon to turn a rusty color.

A full strawberry moon is set to appear in the skies on June 14 this year and is the last full moon of the spring. And since it may be less than 224,000 miles away from Earth, it will be considered a "supermoon."

Although it produces only 15 meteors per hour during its peak, the Leonids can still be a spectacular site this fall. It is caused by comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.
