You may not have heard about the little town of Sheffield, Massachusetts. I have to admit that I have only recently discovered this hidden gem myself. However, I am oh so thankful that I did, because it turns out that this remote town of less than 3,500 residents is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day or weekend getaway. Sheffield is located in the southwestern corner of the state near the New York and Connecticut borders. With beautiful scenery and rustic charm, it is a great place to enjoy some fun outdoor activities.
Sheffield has some of the best waterfall hikes in the state.
Campbell Falls is an easy one-mile trail out to a beautiful fall. This trail is perfect for families with little ones or for those who only want to hike a short distance.
If you are a more adventurous hiker, you may want to try out the challenging Race Brook Falls Trail.
This 329-acre property boasts five miles of trails. Along the hike, there are wildflowers, caves, and marshes to discover and admire. You can also visit the site’s natural history museum.
The Upper Sheffield Covered Bridge, otherwise known as The Old Covered Bridge, is a gorgeous replica lattice truss bridge. The original bridge which was built in 1837 was sadly lost to a fire.
This ordinary-looking granite plaque located in front of the bridge is probably the most unusual thing that you will see in Sheffield.
It was placed here to commemorate a recognized UFO encounter that took place on the grounds in 1969.
After learning all about alien abductions, it may be time for a drink. You won't have to look far - there are some wonderful breweries, distilleries, and wineries in the Sheffield area.
Berkshire Mountain Distillers is a nice place to enjoy a craft cocktail. The distillery often hosts special events featuring live music and food trucks.
If you are looking for a great place to eat, the Stagecoach Tavern at Race Brook Lodge is the place to go.
This cozy tavern dates back to the mid-18th century. You can enjoy local American dishes and delicious drinks in the tavern or in your own private dining area.
