Fall is almost here and it is the perfect time for a scenic day trip! If you are looking for a great little drive, I highly recommend a trip up the Lost Villages Scenic Byway in Western, Massachusetts. This gorgeous 40-mile strip of land along Route 122 offers beautiful views and many interesting stops. As you drive, you will pass through the backroads of the small towns of Orange, New Salem, Petersham, Barre, Oakham, Rutland, and Paxton.
The Byway takes the name “lost villages” because it passes by many of the sites of former towns that became extinct after the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir.
Today the reservoir is a beautiful place to stop and hike.
When you reach Barre, you will definitely want to get out and explore. This charming town is only about 44 square miles and is home to fewer than 6,000 residents.
Cook’s Canyon Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to stop in town. While you are here, you can enjoy an easy 1.5-mile hike past beautiful waterfalls.

Carter & Steven's Farm Store is another fun stop in Barre. From April to October, you can purchase raw milk, fresh produce, grass-fed beef, local groceries, and specialty items.
This restored 1859 stagecoach is just one of the many interesting artifacts on display.
There are also several cute restaurants in the Barre area. If you are looking for a quaint spot to stop for a bite to eat along your journey, I suggest Cafe On The Common.
They have delicious sandwiches and soups as well as yummy breads and baked goods.
When you are finished exploring the town of Barre, hop in your car and continue your Lost Villages Byway journey through the towns of Oakham, Rutland, and Paxton.
