The city of Boston certainly has no shortage of fantastic pizza places to choose from. There are tiny pizza joints such as Galleria Umberto’s Rosticceria in the North End and eclectic pizza restaurants like Rock City Pizza in Allston. But did you know that there is also a great local pizza place named after a famous rock song? Dirty Water Dough Co. on Newbury Street is definitely something to sing about!
When I first heard the name “Dirty Water Dough,” I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. I really didn’t know what to expect. But then I began to hear more and more great reviews about the little Boston restaurant with an unusual name.
The tune is about the dirty water that once made up the once-polluted Charles River. At this time, the people of Boston substituted beer for water when making bread.

Dirty Water Dough Co. built upon this concept and carried it into their pizza dough recipe. The dough is made with their own homebrewed IPA.
After hearing about Dirty Water Dough Co. for several years, I was so excited to finally have a chance to try it out! Let me tell you, I was not disappointed!
My daughter and I decided to stop in for a late dinner. Although the place was packed, we were able to get an alcove seat by the windows overlooking Newbury Street. It was fun to watch all that was happening outside while we waited for our meal.
We perused the menu, but had a difficult time choosing what to order - everything sounded so good and the prices are very reasonable, especially for downtown Boston.
There were tons of interesting pizzas on the menu, including one with mac and cheese and another made with hot dogs. There were also several yummy salads, sandwiches, and sides. We eventually decided on the “Dirty Taco” pizza made with chili-style ground beef, sour cream, and Doritos, as well as a “Big Papi” with sweet Italian sausage and broccoli rabe.
The food was even more delicious than I had imagined it would be. The pizzas were huge! We each ate several slices and still ended up with lots of leftovers. It was so good that we ate these for breakfast the following day.

Dirty Water Dough Co. also has a second location in East Boston. The menu varies slightly from the Newbury Street restaurant.
