Massachusetts is home to countless beautiful churches and chapels. Some of them date back to the nation’s earliest days, while others are more modern works of art. However, this little stone church tucked away on the edge of a lake may just be the most stunning of them all.
There’s no other church in Massachusetts quite like this one.
The Old Stone Church (yes, that is its real name) is located in West Boylston and is a supremely stunning spot to stroll or picnic.
It’s situated right on the banks of the Wachusett Reservoir and is the last remaining vestige of the town that was flooded to create the reservoir.
The church was built in 1891 to replace an older Baptist church that burned to the ground. After just 10 years of use, the church was abandoned to make way for the reservoir.
Today, the inside of the church is empty and open to the public for exploration. It can be visited at any time.
Because the church sits on a small point of land that juts out into the water, it’s a perfect spot for watching the sunset.
Old Stone Church is a favorite with photographers and painters because of its striking location and simple good looks. The massive American flag that hangs on its side gives it an extra picturesque touch.
Even if you’re not the church-going type, you’ll love a visit to this humble yet breathtaking waterside church in Massachusetts.
