The Northern Lights are an astronomical phenomenon that few Bay Staters ever get a chance to witness. This spectacular natural light show is usually best seen in places such as Iceland and Norway. However, every so often, we get lucky here and can view the colorful lights from select locations in and around Massachusetts. Fortunately, 2024 may prove to be one of these times!

This year, after a period of 11 years when the north and south poles reverse places, there will be an increase in solar activity which will result in an expansion of the area where the lights appear. This may be one of the best times in recent history for people in the United States to experience the glowing lights.

The aurora borealis was last seen in Massachusetts in 2023. The coastal town of Rockport was one of the locations where it was visible.

Right now scientists can’t say exactly when and if the lights will be visible. However, past viewings peak times have occurred during the equinoxes in March and October.

Best spots to see the lights include dark sky parks, where artificial light pollution is reduced.

Massachusetts has several dark sky areas including Wachusett Mountain State Park, Mohawk Trail State Forest, Cape Cod National Seashore, and Petersham State Forest.
Hopefully, the lights will make another appearance in Massachusetts later this year. I know I am crossing my fingers that I get the chance to see them!

In the meantime, you can learn more about astronomy by visiting the Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Science in Boston, the Seymour Planetarium in Springfield, and other planetariums throughout the state.
