I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
In some places, you either have to look really hard or be a local in order to find a hidden gem. Hiding in plain sight in a Somerville neighborhood is one of the most mysterious places in the state. Known as the Museum of the Modern Renaissance, this is one hidden gem in Massachusetts worth seeking out.
The whimsically colorful Museum of the Modern Renaissance was founded in 2002 by Russian artists Ekaterina Sorokina and Nicholas Shaplyko who also happen to live here.
Housed in a former Masonic lodge, visitors will be enthralled as they enter the building with its mix of architecture and whimsical art that adorns the interior from floor to ceiling.
Religious iconography and mythical figures are central to many of the art pieces found throughout the museum. There is certainly an air of mystique about the place.
The burst of color are enough to put anyone in a good mood and the intricate details will invoke a sense of awe and wonder. There's no other place quite like this!
The Museum of Modern Renaissance is not open to the public. However, the artists occasionally offer tours and the best way to be informed of upcoming tours is to follow the museum's Facebook page.
The Museum of Modern Renaissance is a one-of-a-kind hidden gem in Massachusetts. To learn more, visit the website and follow the Facebook page for updates and tour announcements.
