Looking for some true peace and quiet? You couldn’t do much better than this serene hidden monastery in Massachusetts. It’s a gorgeous spot that’s open to visitors and welcoming to all. Here’s what you should know about visiting.
When you’re seeking the ultimate in serenity, head to St. Mary’s Monastery in Petersham. This holy place welcomes visitors of faith and otherwise to experience its peacefulness.
The Monastery is a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks who live a simple, monastic life. That means they spend all of their time in workshop, prayer, contemplation, and manual labor on the monastery grounds.
The monks here are welcoming and warm towards visitors. They’re more than willing to educate curious guests on the life of a modern monk, which includes a fair amount of gardening, crafts, cooking, and reading.
In fact, you can experience the life of a monk firsthand on one of their Monastic Experience Weekends. Single men between the ages of 18 to 40 are invited to "job shadow" a monk for three days, during which time you’ll live the life of a modern monk!
Even if you’re not looking to enter the monastery, both men and women seeking peace can stay in the monastery’s 18-room guest house free of charge with breakfast and supper included. Of course, the monastery will gladly accept any offering guests are able to make for their accommodation.
You can visit the St. Mary’s Monastery website to learn more about visiting the monastery. To learn about some of the most beautiful churches in Massachusetts, click here.
