No matter the season, spending a bit of time by the water makes for a great way to de-stress and connect with nature. We aren’t all fortunate enough to live on the coast, but luckily Massachusetts is dotted with gorgeous ponds that make for dreamy destinations. Here are a few particularly magical places that deserve a visit.
Please note: these lakes and ponds aren’t ranked in order of beauty. They’re all gorgeous in their own way.
1. Ashley Reservoir, Holyoke
The Ashley Reservoir is an incredible spot for photography and hiking. There's plenty of wildlife to see, including ducks, geese and the occasional darting rabbit. The water is incredibly clear, and the area is particularly magical in fall when the foliage reflects across the water.
2. Mirror Lake, Coggshall Park, Fitchburg
This is a lovely man-made lake that really feels magical. Check out the stone amphitheater near the charming gazebo, climb on the gnarled tree roots poking out from under rocks and feed the ducks in the water. There are picnic tables, grills and even a playground.
3. Spy Pond, Arlington
This place is tranquil with lots of grassy areas, plentiful benches, and even a few parking spots. It's the perfect destination for a stroll or bike ride. You can ride your bike on the Minuteman Path, or just sit in the sun and enjoy nature. Canoes and kayaks are welcome, so bring along a paddle.
4. Jamaica Pond, Jamaica Plain
Locals know that this is one of Boston's hidden treasures. During the summertime, you can rent a small paddle or row boat and cruise around the pond. It's also a good place for a peaceful walk. There are bathrooms available, and lots of spots to spread out a picnic blanket. If parking is giving you trouble, try leaving your car at the very end of Eliot Street and walking over to the water from there.
5. Eldridge Pond, Boxboro
This lovely pond is actually a reservoir. Located between Boxboro and East Bolton, it's a great place to fish and watch the sunset.
6. North Reservoir, Middlesex Fells Reservation, Medford
This is another great spot for urbanites to escape to. Located within acres of wilderness just outside the city, this beautiful waterfront is an oasis of natural beauty. There are countless trails to hike in the surrounding reservation, and you're bound to find a patch of solitude and quiet even during the busier summer months.
7. Fresh Pond, Cambridge
This pond is a fantastic urban gem. It's a popular spot for joggers and dog-walkers, and a great way to fit a bit of nature into your daily routine. Parking is free for Cambridge residents, and the trails around the pond are bike-friendly. There's even a special area where dogs can swim.
8. Horn Pond, Woburn
This pond is a hit with families, joggers, bikers and dogs. Even though it's a popular spot, there are plenty of quiet places along the water to watch the swans or enjoy a moment of solitude. There are also lots of local parking options, so you'll be able to find a spot even in the summer.
9. Walden Pond, Concord
Walden Pond hardly needs an introduction, but just in case you weren't aware of this famous spot, it's a gorgeous swimming hole and favorite haunt of Henry David Thoreau. Check it out during the warmer months for a great place to splash around, or walk the many paths and trails in the Walden Pond State Reservation year-round.
10. Lake Mansfield, Great Barrington
This is a wonderful neighborhood lake that's perfect for families. There are lifeguards on duty daily during the summer, and the clear waters are perfect for boating and swimming.
