I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As a coastal state, Massachusetts is home to numerous pristine beaches. However, many of its beaches get a bit crowded come summertime. If you’re in need of a patch of sand that’s somewhat remote, Lovells Island has a hidden gem beach in Massachusetts that’s worth checking out. And, interestingly enough, the island is also home to a historic fort.
Lovells Island is a remote 61-acre island with a rocky coastline and scenic views. Over the years, the island has seen numerous shipwrecks.
If you're in need of an escape from the city, this is the perfect place. As part of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, Lovells Island is only reachable via ferry or private boat.
You can certainly spend the day enjoying some peace, quiet, and solitude on this hidden gem beach in Massachusetts. While there is no lifeguard, you can go swimming, and hiking around the island is always an option as well.
Walking around the historic Fort Standish and its gun batteries and bunkers is a fascinating thing to do while you're here. This fort was completed around the turn of the 20th century and served its purpose until 1947 when it was abandoned.
Of course, you can always spend the night on Lovells Island. There is a tent campground where you can get a site. Just remember to take everything you need to the island and then take everything with you when you return to the mainland.
If you decide to camp here on the rustic Lovells Island, you may be treated to a gorgeous sunset over the Boston city skyline in the distance. What a gorgeous view!
