When warm weather returns to the Bay State, everyone is looking to spend some time in the sun. Of course, in a small state that’s so rich with beautiful coastline and beaches that are international travel destinations, it’s difficult to pin down a beach that’s totally unknown. 1. Bound Brook Island Beach, Wellfleet

This beach may be the best-kept local secret on the Cape. It's a hidden beach that's best reached on foot, and not many people even know it exists. To reach this gorgeous spot, hike about a mile down Bound Brook Island Road in Wellfleet. The walk should take you about 25 minutes or so, depending on the amount of gear you're bringing. Once you arrive, you'll be greeted by gorgeous vistas of unspoiled white sand and glittering waters.
2. Kalmus Beach, Barnstable

Kalmus Beach is a great hidden beach for strolling and and swimming. The sand is very soft; lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and it's practically tourist-free at times. There is a bath house for changing. This is definitely one of the quieter and better-maintained beaches in the bustling Hyannis area.
3. Dane Street Beach, Beverly

Dane Street Beach is dog-friendly (on leash) during the off-season and a great place to get away from the crowds at nearby Singing Beach. The sand is a bit rocky, but that also makes it a prime spot for sea glass hunting.
4. Halfmoon Beach, Gloucester

This beach is small but incredibly scenic. In addition to warm waters and gorgeous views, you'll find public bathrooms and plenty of spots to picnic and grill. If you're so inclined, you can climb up onto the rocky cliffs that hug this charming beach.
5. Chapin Memorial Beach, Dennis

This spot is absolutely perfect for watching the sunset. The light reflects on the shallow tide pools and creates an extremely beautiful effect. The sand is soft and white, making it a great place to spread a towel and bask in the sun. Though locals certainly know about this seaside gem, it doesn't get quite as much tourist traffic as some of the other beaches in Dennis.
6. Rexhame Beach, Marshfield

This is a charming beach with lots of amenities and breathtaking views. A South Shore gem, Rexhame Beach is dog-friendly and scenic as can be. Unless you visit during peak hours in the middle of the summer, you'll likely find this sandy strip to be peaceful and not too crowded.

7. Cold Storage Beach, Dennis

Cold Storage Beach is definitely a local favorite, and for good reason. The sand is soft and clean; the waters are relatively warm, and the views are unbeatable. You can actually walk on the beach all the way to Brewster if you care for a coastal hike. Parking can be a challenge at peak hours, but you can normally find a spot without too long of a wait.
8. Herring Cove Beach, Provincetown

You may not have heard of this spot unless you frequent the Provincetown area. This beach is narrow but long and usually quieter than nearby Race Point Beach. It's a great place to go for a sunset picnic, as this beach is one of the few westward-facing beaches in Massachusetts. There are some rocks mixed in with the sand, so this might be a good place to break out the beach chairs.
9. Onset Beach, Wareham

Parking here can be a bit prickly, but if you can find a spot you're guaranteed a delightful beach day. It's one of the smaller beaches in the area, and the water is calm and clear. There are kayak and paddleboard rentals available if you feel like taking to the waves.
10. Carson Beach, Boston

This small beach south of Boston is a great spot to spend a day near the water without traveling too far. There are bathrooms available as well as a snack bar, and visiting the beach is free. The best way to reach this spot from the city is to take the T.
11. Long Beach, Gloucester

This North Shore jewel is close to the picturesque town of Rockport, which makes it a great addition to any day trip in the area. The waves are usually small here, and the sand is soft and clean. There are bathrooms available and outdoor showers to rinse off afterwards.
12. Humarock Beach, Humarock (Scituate)

This beach is big and beautiful. The vistas from the sand are breathtaking, and it's incredibly private. Parking is essentially non-existent, so you'll have to either walk in from a ways away or bike to the shore. However, your effort will be rewarded with clean sand, clear water and plenty of space to relax. This beach is also close to Sands End Cafe and a great ice cream stand.
