The garden was started by Mabel and Al Lumley over 60 years ago. Though they originally planned to grow fruit and nut trees, soil tests showed that the earth on their property was too alkaline for the orchards they had envisioned. However, it was the perfect pH for growing lilacs.

The garden is open to the public every day during the blooming season, and there is no admission cost. You can enjoy this massive collection of lilacs for free while they last. There is also an art gallery full of paintings and drawings to peruse once you’re finished taking in the natural beauty of the gardens. If you’re inclined to take a bit of the garden home with you, the Lilacland occasionally has a potted lilac or two for sale.
