During the summer, the beach communities see an influx of tourists. Although completely warranted (hey, our beaches are some of the best in the country!) we do have one of the most amazing places in New England when it comes to beaches, have you ever been to Cape Cod? But then again, sometimes we just want to get away from the crowds, not join them. So, where does one go? Well, we found one of the least touristy destinations to go camping in Massachusetts. If you want to get away but want some solitude, book a campsite at the underrated Laurel Lake.

Have you ever driven the length of the Mohawk Trail? Not only is it the first scenic byway in New England, but it is a beautiful road filled with rolling hillsides, stunning flowing rivers, and forest scenery everywhere you look. If you have driven this by way then you may have stopped at Erving State Forest.

This 4,500-acre forest filled with hemlock, oak, and maple trees is a wonderful hidden gem in Massachusetts. With all of the major cities either to the south or east, this area is the perfect place to get away from all the noise and connect with the great outdoors.

Among the recreational activities you can enjoy here are fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, picnicking, camping, and horseback riding. It's a wonderful place to connect with nature. Even if you choose to just relax by the calming waters it can easily make the trip all worth it.

Best of all, you won't find the crowds that you would at the ocean beaches during the summer. There's no fighting for a spot on the sand here! Bring your family spread out on the soft warm sand and allow all of your cares to fade away in the sun.

There's something quite spectacular, too, about having water views right from your campsite. Sitting on a hill overlooking the pristine Laurel Lake are 27 campsites, and each one has its own grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Just imagine hearing the lapping water along the shore as the soundtrack you fall asleep to.

The peak camping season runs from mid-May through early September. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance.
