The heady scent of lavender is one of the most calming, delicious aromas on the planet. When you feel like getting lost in nature and enjoying the loveliest smell of summer, head to this amazing lavender labyrinth in Massachusetts.
Johnson Hill Farm is a splendid lavender wonderland tucked away in Shelburne Falls, Mass.
Johnson Hill Farm is located at the top of a hill, nestled amongst the rolling hills of western Massachusetts. This farm is a true labor of love – most of the fields are tended by hand with nothing but simple garden tools, a weed-whacker, and lawnmower.
The most unique feature of the farm is definitely the relaxing lavender labyrinth.
Just in case you didn’t know, a labyrinth is actually the complete opposite of a maze. Rather than being built to disorient and confuse walkers with multiple paths and dead ends, true labyrinths actually only have one path that winds to the center of the pattern. They’re meant to soothe and their visitors and inspire contemplation, and this lavender labyrinth definitely delivers.
The calming scent of lavender wafts through the air as you wind your way towards the center of the labyrinth.
You’ll be able to hear bumblebees and birds in the surrounding fields and the summer sunshine will warm you through. Some visitors have chosen to walk the labyrinth during the full moon, which is an especially soothing experience.
The lavender labyrinth is open to the public by scheduled visit.
You need to call ahead to arrange a time to stop by, but visiting is free. If you can’t get enough of this purple plant, be sure to check out Johnson Hill Farm’s annual lavender festival. It’s held the last full weekend of June each year (June 29 and 30, 2019) and is packed with local artisans, lavender crafts, and plenty of fun lavender products for sale.
