I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Bay Staters love great cuisine, and we are fortunate to have a vast selection of incredible restaurants. Whether it’s pizza or pasta, seafood or Thai food, the quality of our food is top-notch. That accolade can also be extended to sandwiches. For some of the best and the biggest sandwiches in Massachusetts, Al’s South Street Cafe can’t be beat.
Al Costello had a dream he turned into reality -- he opened up Al's State Street Cafe on South Street in Boston over a decade ago. Since then, three other locations have been opened around the city.
Al's South Street Cafe became popular with locals due to the size of its subs as well as their affordable prices. Great food plus great prices turned out to be a recipe for success.
The sub sandwiches at Al's are massive! A small isn't small at all at about 10 inches while a large is a foot and a half. You'll need to bring your appetite to this sandwich shop or prepare to share with a friend.
Choose either hot sub like the Sicilian steak, South Street Cafe Chicken, Chicken Eggplant Parmesan, or the vegetarian, among others. You can add extra toppings if you choose.
One other thing Al's is known for is its Bag Lunch which includes a small sub, a bag of chips, and a soda. And it's priced at just over $10, which is very affordable in the city of Boston.
Have you ever been to an Al’s Cafes location for some of the biggest sandwiches in Massachusetts? If you have, what did you get? Share your experience in the comments. For more information and to see a menu, visit the Al’s Cafes website and follow the Facebook page for updates. But you must visit one of the locations and find out for yourself why it’s been featured on Phantom Gourmet!
