The Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum is located in Lenox. It houses countless artifacts and objects from the golden age of the trains in Massachusetts, with everything from old baggage carts to entire train cars on display. However, this museum also offers rides on real-life trains that are some of the coolest excursions in the state.
Climb aboard the Hoosac Valley Train in Adams (not Lenox) for a trip through some of the most scenic landscapes in the Berkshires. These train rides are fun and educational, besides being an attractive link between downtown Adams and North Adams.
Each trip crosses 10 miles of pristine countryside dotted with forests, rolling hills, wildflower fields, and little rivers. The interior of the train is a throwback to the old days of rail travel, with large seats and big windows to admire the views. Kids in particular will love spotting the peaks of the Hoosac Mountain Range and Mount Greylock, the tallest mountain in the state.
There are three different trains that run throughout the day and depart from 98 Crowley Avenue, North Adams. During the summer season, trains depart on weekends at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Starting in September until the fall equinox, the railroad offers 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. rides only. Each ride lasts about an hour round-trip.
Ticket prices for the Hoosac Valley Train vary by season, but from the summer to September you can expect to pay $12 per adult, $10 per senior, and $8 per child 4-14 years old.
