I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Historical sites can be found in just about every town and city around the Bay State. And by the coast, you’re more apt to find historic military sites. If you enjoy military history, there’s a historic military park in Massachusetts you will have to put on your list to visit. Fort Taber Park is a one-of-a-kind park that’s also as scenic as it is historic.
Set on Clark's Point in New Bedford, Fort Taber Park is a 47-acre green space. Throughout its acreage, visitors will find a museum, a playground, numerous military batteries, and a 19th-century fort.
Fort Taber was originally built as an earthwork in 1861 during the Civil War. Soon after it was completed, six brass and iron cannons were installed to protect the city of New Bedford.
The fort was named in honor of the New Bedford mayor at the time. In 1963, granite walls were added to the fort. The tall walls replaced the earthworks and became more of a deterrent to enemy forces.
The year was 1898 when this military property was renamed Fort Rodman to honor the fallen Lt. Col. William Logan Rodman. He was killed in battle during the Civil War.
