I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
There aren’t too many places in the world where you are almost always guaranteed to see a whale (or at least some form of marine life) every time you visit. But Stellwagen Bank in Massachusetts is one place where you can. Set off the coast between Cape Ann and Cape Cod, this marine sanctuary is heaven on earth for those who want to see marine life.
Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a large federally-protected ocean sanctuary covering an area of 842 acres. It can be found at the mouth of the Massachusetts Bay.
You can book with one of several whale-watching companies out of Plymouth, Provincetown, and Cape Ann. The best times of the year to go see whales at Stellwagen Bank are between mid-May and October.
There's nothing more magical than seeing a whale out in its natural habitat. And it's also quite special to see how a child reacts to seeing a whale out in the wild! Whale-watching is one of the best family-friendly activities you can do.
Aside from whale watching, birdwatching, fishing, diving, and boating are also quite popular activities at this sanctuary out in the water. While this sanctuary is not on land, it offers plenty of things to see and do. There's no place quite like it!
