Massachusetts is a nature lover’s paradise. We have mountains, rivers, beaches, waterfalls, and enough hiking trails to keep you occupied for years. This beautiful green gorge in Hampden County is one of the loveliest spots in the state for a peaceful amble through nature and a bit of splashing around. Here’s what you need to know.
Granville Gorge is a gorgeous (get it?) natural spot in the town of Southwick. It’s an emerald hideaway you’re sure to love.
The gorge is part of a conservation property that spans six acres and includes a short public trail. The riverbank is dotted with beautiful boulders and charming surprises, like this carved sculpture.
Wildlife is abundant here, with chipmunks and birds darting in and out of the greenery. You’re even likely to spot some colorful mushrooms fit for a fairytale.
As you walk along the bottom of the gorge, you’ll encounter little waterfalls and shallow pools perfect for swimming. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and don’t get in the water if the current is strong.
One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the gorge is to spread a towel or picnic blanket out on one of the large, flat boulders that extend into the water. Try not to nod off as you enjoy the sunshine and gurgling water.
There’s parking in the lot for about 10 cars, but that’s more than enough on most pleasant days. Simply park your car in the lot and continue down the trail along the side the river to reach the gorge.
