As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
When I go on a trip, I consider the place where I sleep to be part of the vacation experience. I could always opt for a generic chain hotel, but I find that lodging at a place with a bit of history is so much more interesting and memorable. Hotels like the Deerfield Inn in Deerfield and the Omni Parker House in Boston are filled with unique architectural details and unusual backstories. The Hotel On North in the Berkshires is another place that has an interesting past.
Hotel On North is a gorgeous boutique hotel located in the city of Pittsfield, a centrally located part of the Berkshires. Although the hotel has only been in operation since 2015, the buildings in which it is housed date back to the late 1800s and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Local hotel owners Laurie and David Tierney transformed what was once a well-known sporting goods and menswear store called Besse-Clarke, into an elegant 45-room hotel and venue space.
In doing so, they went to great lengths to preserve many of the interesting architectural details of the original space.

Many of the common areas have exposed brick walls, tin ceilings, and unique furnishings. A display of rotating artwork can be found at the hotel’s “gallery.”
Modern amenities like fast-speed internet, high-definition televisions, and luxurious linens can be found in every room.
My favorite room is the library suite. When you book a stay here, you can sleep surrounded by 125 stocked bookshelves complete with a rolling library ladder. This suite also features a wet bar, claw-foot bathtub, walk-in shower, and two flat-screen televisions.
There is also a full-service restaurant and bar located within the hotel. The popular Berkshire Palate serves craft food and cocktails five days a week.
A stay at Hotel On North can be easily booked right here on Expedia. For more information about the hotel, please visit the Hotel On North website and Hotel On North’s Facebook page. If you have previously stayed here, please let us know about your experience. While in Pittsfield, be sure to visit Lake Onota and Balance Rock State Park.
